I bought a silver bracelet, with an inscribed message in sanscrit, and a dragon on the inside, from this woman in the Indian Himalayas in 2007.  She was a Tibetan refugee.  In Tibet she was a university professor.  Highly educated, multiple languages, family around the world.  As a refugee she couldn’t go anywhere else because she didn’t have a passport and wouldn’t be able to get back into India.  If she returned to Tibet she would, she said, likely end up in forced labor on a road gang.  So she spoke to tourists.  And sold a magnificent silver bracelet to me for the equivalent of six dollars.  I’ve worn it every day since.
